Spring 2012 Workshops
American Jazz with Erin Durrah
April 21st, 2012
1pm - 4pm
Workshop Description: American Jazz.
This workshop provides an exciting overview of basic jazz dance techniques ranging from traditional to more contemporary styles. We will briefly examine the historical progression of the jazz dance movement and its presence in popular culture, while also exploring choreography through set pieces and student improvisation exercises. Jazz shoes and ballet attire are preferable, but comfortable clothing that allows maximum flexibility are also acceptable.
Teacher: Erin Durrah, MA, Director of Education and Community Engagement.
Erin began her dance training at the age of 3 with the Star Dance Studio in San Francisco, where she was exposed to Jazz, Ballet, Tap, and Acrobatics. These interests expanded to Hip Hop, which she had the opportunity to study for a semester at UC Davis, prior to receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2005. In 2010, Erin completed her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of San Francisco.
During her practicum she was able to witness the therapeutic benefits of the arts in the mental health field. Thereafter she began teaching PDT Princess 101 classes and the satellite French Immersion Ballet and Folk dance classes at the Lycée Lapérouse, while also providing Jazz dance instruction to students at the Bay High School. Erin now serves as Presidio Performing Arts Center’s, Director of Education and Community Engagement where she works to ensure the accessibility of dance programming in schools and the community at large.
